The table below assumes you are selling your weapons at the same time you are upgrading your cargo space. Armour, speed, and laden range represent the capabilities of your ship after the upgrade is completed, but keep in mind, that these values are reflecting a craft that has only been retrofitted to carry more. Nothing, apart from removing the weapons and adding the most cargo space possible, has been altered.

As you can see, there are several aspects by which you can categorize ships, ranging from her price, range, armour, and speed to her size and agility. Depending on your play style, there are various ways to get the best out of your money.
Agile and quick ships are good for fleeing from enemies most efficiently, while long range vessels are ideal for rare trade runs, and the ones that have better cargo capacity, are obviously generating more profit in a single regular trade run, than their counterparts.
Presuming, you want to trade, and if you are planning on following my guide to maximize your profit income on each level, I would advise, that you plan your upgrades in this manner:
- Upgrade to a Hauler as soon as possible, after reaching Level 2, this will get you a decent cargo capacity so you can more than double your trade profits compared to the good old Sidewinder.
- Skip the Adder, and get yourself a Cobra Mk III, again doubling on your profits/run. Not only is this a capacity upgrade, but you'll also get some more stock armour and jump range.
- You can either skip the Mk IV and go straight for the Type-6 or not. Both ways will result in increasing your profits.
The Miner
As you can see in the table below, you can start mining as early as you reach a Cobra Mk IV. The price below is the base price of the ships, so you should expect an upgrade price, which I cannot predict, as it is based on your personal needs.
I've included ships that cost more than the entry above them, and still have less cargo capacity, these however have other perks, like better speed, more agility, or a more attractive hardpoint distribution, that possibly make them appealing.
A friendly reminder: you currently cannot land large ships on small (outpost) stations. Consider this if you're usually mining in a system where there are no other types of stations to use.
You can locate both ships and modules nearby using this tool.
The Explorer
Here's another table showing the possible progression by which you can expect a growth in your maximum jump distance in relation to credits invested.
As you can see below, a really optimized Hauler can give you 37 lys per jump, which makes her one of the most ideal low level ships available. Next in line would be the 1,8 million credit Diamondback Explorer, with a nearly identical range of 37 lys. For almost four times it's price, at 6,6 million comes the ASP Explorer, which is the current favorite of many pilots, as it is considered the epitome of exploration vessels. The only craft that is capable of not even giving the tail lights to the ASP is the Anaconda with a whopping 41 lys of maximized jump range.
