General Tips and Tricks

Flight Safety
  • If you get interdicted on your way to a station or an in-system target, don't panic. Just submit to it, by slowing down, while still following the escape vector provided by the mini-game. Once you are out of supercruise, assign 3 pips to SYS and 3 to ENG by pressing the left and up arrows on your keyboard. Then boost away from your assailant by pressing TAB repeatedly. Once your FSD (frameshift drive) has done it's cool down, press J to charge it back to supercruise and away you go.
  • Always have emergency funds for insurance. If you lose a very expensive ship, you'll have to work your way up to riches all over again.
  • Never leave a station without a shield for your own sake.
  • If you get bored, try to rotate play styles. Don't be afraid to try something new.
Upgrading
  • Never sell your ship with upgrades still installed. You can get more money back by selling every module first, and then your old ship.
  • You can find ships or equipment nearby, by using this page or the search tool on the left side of this site, after imputing your current location.
General Ship Operation Tips
  • If you have a fuel scoop, use it whenever possible. You'll never know when you might get a series of unusable stars on your way to your destination, and it may be too late to return if you spend all your fuel.
  • Don't be alarmed by being unable to plot a course to the galactic core from the human inhabited space. You can only plan your trip up to 1000 ly.
  • To see the most stars in galaxy map, change the view to realistic.
  • When planning a trip the galaxy map will show you the range after which your fuel will be consumed. Refuel before you reach the dotted line on your way.
  • Stop next to the star at about 1/2 or 2/3 of your fuel scoop's intake capacity and wait for it to refill your fuel cells without having to worry about overheating. This will work on most ships.
  • Scoopable star types: O, B, A, F, G, K, M (Oh, Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me)
  • When you're planning a trip to another star system, you can choose either the fast route, or the economical. By choosing the former option, you will get to your destination faster, but at much higher fuel cost, while the latter will get you much further fuel-wise, at the cost of many more stops on the way.
  • Prioritise modules to avert unwanted module deactivation due to power loss. Preferably do this, while still docked.
  • Assign fire groups and learn to use them on the right panel. You can switch them mid-flight by pressing the N key.
  • You can get an external camera view for screenshots, that can be moved around by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Space in game. Be careful though, your ship is vulnerable in this state.
